I began to actively work in my yard when my mom passed away at the age of sixty-seven. I had always had a green thumb but life and work had gotten away from me and I never had the time for working outside. It started off with just the basics – mowing the lawn, getting rid of weeds, trimming the hedges – but slowly it evolved into a beatification process that helped me because it reminded me of my mom. She loved plants and flowers and growing up our apartment was always filled with potted plants. After completely landscaping the front yard I turned my focus to the large backyard. It was mostly bare, outside of the hoop greenhouse that was overgrown at the very back of the property. That became my next project and now it is a fully functional greenhouse that I spend most of my free time in. I’m really lucky to have found a way to feel close to my mother after she was gone.
